Aghamatik 2017: Buying and Selling

 Description:

Mathematics is everywhere. The lessons on the four basic operations is a challenge to some pupils. One way to motivate them is to make them realize that the basic concepts in Mathematics is used in everyday living.

Buying and selling is an activity that will help boost the confidence of the pupils and expose themselves to the outside jobs like being an entrepreneur. In this activity, the pupils will take two different roles: seller and buyer. The grade 3 pupils will be the sellers. They will be focusing more on finding out whether they are able to give the correct change to the buyer as well as whether they will get a profit or loss in the process. The grade 2 pupils will be the buyers. They will be focusing more on honing their budgeting skills and finding out whether they receive the correct change from the sellers.

Learning Goals and Objectives:

For the Sellers:

The pupils should be able to:

  1. bring useful items/preloved items that are within the allotted budget

  2. sell the items confidently

  3. compute for the gain or loss and change for the buyers

  4. appreciate the value of money

For the Buyers:

The pupils should be able to:

  1. buy items within their allotted budget

  2. compute for the change they received from the sellers

  3. appreciate the value of money

Method:

For the Sellers:

  1. Pre-Activity: Distribute the letter for the parents to the class a week before the activity. Discuss the said activity to the pupils during their Math class, too. This will give them ample time to prepare the items they will sell during the activity day. Remind them to bring smaller bills or coins on the day of the activity. They will use this for the change they will give to the buyers.

  2. During the Activity: Let the pupils set up their items in their assigned area. Remind them to sell their items at a reasonable price and to do accurate computations in giving change to the buyers. Distribute the task sheet.

  3. After the Activity: Let the pupils answer the task sheet. It will show their computation of profit or loss. Allow them to write their realizations about the activity as well.

For the Buyers:

  1. Pre-Activity: Distribute the letter for the parents to the class a week before the activity. Discuss the said activity to the pupils during their Math class, too.

  2. During the Activity: Distribute the task sheet. Let the buyers go to the different selling areas bringing along with them their task sheet. Remind them to list the items they bought with their corresponding prices.

  3. After the Activity: Ask the pupils to solve for the total amount of the items they bought and compute for the change. Allow them to write their realizations about the activity, too.

Prior to the activity, a letter was prepared and checked by the grade school coordinator and approved by the principal then it was  sent to grade 2 - 3 parents to inform them of what their child will bring and what is expected from the activity.

After the activity, the students accomplished the task sheet.

Classroom Based - Activity "Aghamatik" 2018: Puzzle Builders

Description:

Mathematics is used in everyday life. Soon, some of our pupils will be designers or architects. Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with different shapes/figures. As we look around, we see lots of shapes/figures. In order for the pupils to appreciate the concept of geometry, they will be tasked to create different figures using 7 flat shapes know as tangram.

Learning Goals and Objectives:

The activity will help the pupils develop love for geometry and exercise their creativity, problem solving and critical thinking as one of the learning goals of K – 12 curriculums.

Methods:

  1. Orient the pupils about the activity. Inform them that they will act as puzzle builders.

  2. Let the pupils work with their groupmates (pair- square: 3 – 4 members). Show them 2 figures to follow and give them 3 minutes to form the puzzle. (Example: a lady, a flower, a fish, or the one shown above)

  3. To make the activity more interesting, level it up by having it as a game. First to finish the puzzle will be given a 5 point credit, second to finish gets 3 points credit and third to finish gets 1 point credit. No credits will be given to the 4th - 8th rank. Give them about 3 – 5 figures to form. The winners will be acknowledged and will be given a very good stamps on their hands.

  4. Next, challenge the pupils to create a figure aside from the figures shown to them. This time they will do it on their own. (Individual Work)

  5. Distribute “Classroom - Based Activity - Worksheet (CBA-WS)” and the pre-cut pieces of papers (tangrams).

  6. Instruct them to mount, color, and name the figure they have formed on the CBA-WS.

  7. Allow them to use their imagination or creativity. Best creations or works will be displayed on the Math Bulletin Board.

  8. Choose 2 – 3 best works then let them explain their work to the class.

  9. Ask: What was the figure you created?

How were you able to create the figure?

Reflection: Summary Sentence. Let them answer the question below in their CBA-WS.

*What did you learn from the activity?
